One New Year’s Day a few years ago, as I was taking down my Christmas tree that was losing needles faster than the clock was ticking, I heard someone talking about picking a word to focus on for the New Year rather than committing to a resolution or two.
I thought it sounded like a great idea, and all day long I started thinking about what my word would be. I also decided that this idea might be good for my two children, who were in high school at the time (and sometimes don’t buy into my crazy ideas as easily as they did when they were 5). They accepted my challenge and each of them chose a word. I told them I’d ask no questions about why they picked their word nor would I pass any judgment.
Once we chose our words, we painted them on rocks. We kept those painted rocks on my windowsill in my dining room through the whole year. Our words were “Believe, Grow,” and “Adventure.”
And it’s a tradition we continue each New Year.
What is your word for the year ahead? Or will you go the route of a resolution? Whatever you do, or don’t do, I hope that the New Year ahead will be a good one for you.
