Making weather predictions would be a whole lot easier if the seasons would just behave the way they were supposed to. Winter doesn’t officially begin until December 21 this year, but that doesn’t mean wintry weather won’t arrive ahead of schedule.

So what’s the earliest date each year that it can snow in North America?

Actually, that’s a trick question. Snow can fall at any time of the year, including summer, especially at high elevations. For example:

  • On July 26, 2015, an intense cold front descended on the northern Rockies, bringing several inches of snow to three US states: Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming.August 23, 2015, residents of Calgary, Alberta Canada woke up to a snow covered ground. In fact, many reported on social media that after this incident, they had officially seen snow on the ground during every month of the year in this region.June snowfalls were reported in Hawaii and the Northern Rockies.On July 10th and 11th, snow was reported in parts of Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming.
